Quick answer
A direct mail calendar maps your mailings to the moments your audience cares about, then works backwards from the date you want the post on the doormat. For 2027 the big UK dates include Mother's Day (7 March), Easter (28 March), the end of the tax year (5 April), Father's Day (20 June), Black Friday (26 November) and Christmas. Allow for delivery (Royal Mail Advertising Mail Economy aims to deliver within six working days of posting) and production (once artwork and data are approved, most campaigns are produced and handed to Royal Mail within 5–10 working days). Our free printable PDF gives you a 12-month 2027 calendar with space to plan each campaign.
Key takeaways
- Plan from the in-home date backwards: delivery window, then production, then proofs, data and creative.
- Royal Mail Advertising Mail delivery aims run from next working day (1st Class) to within six working days (Economy), or a date you choose up to 28 days after posting (Economy deferred).
- Once artwork and data are approved, most Fretwell campaigns are produced and handed to Royal Mail within 5–10 working days. Complex packs and very high volumes can take longer.
- Several 2027 dates fall early: Mother's Day is 7 March and Easter Sunday is 28 March, so spring mailings need briefing in January.
- Royal Mail publishes its Christmas last posting dates each autumn. Check them before you fix a December drop.

2027 direct mail planning calendar
A printable two-page A4 calendar: every month of 2027 with the key UK dates, the latest sensible briefing point and blank space to write in your own campaigns.
Print it, pin it up and fill in your campaigns month by month. The rest of this page explains the key dates and how to work out when each stage needs to happen. For the full campaign process, see how to plan a direct mail campaign, and use the direct mail campaign checklist once a campaign is under way.
Work backwards from the in-home date
The date that matters is when your mailing lands, not when it is printed. Start there and subtract each stage. Royal Mail's Advertising Mail service gives four delivery speeds, so the speed you choose sets how early you need to post.
| Royal Mail Advertising Mail speed | Delivery aim |
|---|---|
| 1st Class | Next working day after posting |
| 2nd Class | Within three working days after posting |
| Economy | Within six working days after posting (sorted only) |
| Economy deferred | Within six working days after a date you choose, up to 28 days after posting (sorted only) |
- 1
Fix the in-home date
The week you want people to receive the mailing, for example the fortnight before a sale or the start of an appeal.
- 2
Subtract the delivery window
Economy aims to deliver within six working days of posting. Economy deferred lets you post early and choose the start of the delivery window, which is useful when you want mail to land close to a launch.
- 3
Subtract production
Once approved artwork and data are received, most campaigns are produced and handed to Royal Mail within 5–10 working days. Allow more for complex personalised packs or very high volumes.
- 4
Subtract proofs and data
Allow time for print and personalisation proofs to be checked and signed off, and for your data to be cleaned and suppressed. See data cleansing for mailings.
- 5
Subtract creative and briefing
Copy, design and approvals usually take the longest. Brief early, especially for packs with several components.
Worked example: landing before Black Friday 2027
To have an Economy mailing delivered by Friday 12 November 2027, two weeks before Black Friday, post by Thursday 4 November. With 10 working days for production, artwork and data need to be approved by Thursday 21 October. Counting Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. Your mailing house will confirm the exact handover date.

Explore the servicePlanning the busiest seasons
A few periods put the most pressure on print and mailing schedules. Build them into your plan early.
- Spring (Mother's Day and Easter). Both fall in March in 2027, so creative needs to be signed off in January or early February. A mailing that arrives after Mother's Day is wasted spend.
- Tax year end. Charities asking for gifts before 5 April, and financial services firms promoting ISAs or pensions, should aim to land in March. See GDPR and direct mail for the rules on mailing existing supporters and customers.
- Black Friday and Christmas retail. Catalogues and offer mailings for late November are usually in production in October. Economy deferred lets you post early and still choose when delivery starts.
- Christmas appeals. Charity Christmas appeals are often planned in the summer and mailed in November. If you are planning one, our charity appeal pack checklist covers each component and the compliance checks.
Choosing a format affects the schedule too. A postcard can be printed and posted faster than a multi-item letter pack. Compare the options in letter vs postcard vs self-mailer.
