A booklet for reading, keeping or referring back to
A booklet is often the right answer when a single folded sheet cannot carry the full story. An event programme should be easy to follow on the day; a manual should stay legible during repeated use; a report may need space for tables, commentary and photographs. The way a reader uses the pages should guide choices about size, paper, cover and binding. Send us the proposed page count and intended use early so we can flag production considerations before layout is locked.
Programmes and magazines
A5 is a portable choice for an event or a shorter publication. A4 offers more room for photography, longer articles or advertising. Portrait and landscape layouts can both be considered.
Reports and guides
Where charts or instructions need to remain readable, choose the finished size with the smallest text and most detailed spread in mind, not just the cover design.
Page counts
A saddle-stitched booklet is usually designed in multiples of four pages because each folded sheet creates four pages. Include the cover in the overall page plan when discussing the specification.
Paper & finishes
Uncoated paper can be comfortable for text-heavy pages and pages people may want to annotate. Silk and gloss coated papers help imagery and colour stand out. An FSC-certified stock can be specified, and a cover stock different from the inner pages can change how substantial the booklet feels without changing its content.
A laminated cover can help with frequent handling. Spot UV, foil and embossing are available if a title or graphic needs a considered highlight. We can advise on how a proposed finish interacts with the paper and binding, especially near the spine and on heavily used covers.
Stitched or PUR bound?
Saddle stitching secures folded sheets through the centre. It works well for slimmer booklets and programmes where pages should open easily and a printed spine is not needed. Allowing the correct page count before artwork is complete helps avoid blank or forced pages.
PUR perfect binding gives a thicker booklet a squared spine and a more book-like appearance. It can suit manuals or reports with more content, but the suitability depends on stock and page count. We will discuss spine width and how the booklet needs to open before recommending a binding.
Litho or digital printing?
Digital print is practical for a smaller run, a revised edition or a booklet that changes by recipient or group. Our Heidelberg Versafire presses support variable data for relevant personalisation.
For a longer run of the same pages, B2 litho on our Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 may be preferable. We choose between processes based on the complete specification: quantity, format, colour, paper and finishing. Folding and binding are carried out in-house, so the printed sheets can move straight into the finishing workflow.
Mailing & trade print
If a booklet will be mailed, think about its final thickness and weight before deciding on page stock or adding inserts. We can discuss a suitable envelope and pack, produce other printed components, prepare address data and manage enclosing and UK postal sortation in-house. A booklet that looks right on a desk should also arrive in a pack that works.
