Quick answer
Social media advertising reaches large audiences quickly and cheaply, with detailed interest targeting, but each ad gets only a moment of attention in a fast-moving feed. Direct mail costs more per person, yet it is kept for 7.4 days and gets 151 seconds of attention on average (JICMAIL, Q2 2026). Research for Royal Mail Marketreach also found mail is remembered 35% more than social media. The two work best together: people who had seen mail looked at a social ad from the same brand for 30% longer.
Key takeaways
- Social is the UK's second-largest ad channel, with £11.5 billion spent in 2025 (AA/WARC). That makes feeds crowded.
- Attention per social ad is measured in seconds. Attention per direct mail item is measured in minutes.
- Mail is remembered 35% more than social media (Royal Mail Marketreach / Neuro-Insight, 2018).
- Social wins on speed, cost per impression and interest-based targeting. Mail wins on attention, trust and reaching named customers.
- Use them together: mail first, then social retargeting while the pack is still in the home.

The attention gap
UK adults spend a lot of time online. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report found users spent an average of 4 hours 30 minutes online each day, including 1 hour 10 minutes on Meta's apps and sites. But time on platform is not attention to ads. Lumen Research's UK eye-tracking found Facebook ads were on screen for around 8 seconds and received an average of 2.1 seconds of attention. That study dates from 2018, but it remains one of the clearest independent measures.
Mail gets dedicated time. JICMAIL's household panel records an average of 151 seconds of attention and 4.4 interactions with every direct mail item, which stays in the home for a week or more.

Memory and trust
Neuroscience research by Neuro-Insight for Royal Mail Marketreach (2018) found mail is remembered 35% more than social media and 49% more than email. Separate Marketreach research found 87% of people describe mail as believable.
Social platforms have strengths of their own: video, instant sharing and the ability to click and buy straight away. But for messages that need to be remembered, trusted or explained, mail has a clear advantage.
Targeting and cost
Social advertising is excellent for reaching people by interest or behaviour, and for testing creative quickly at low cost. Direct mail is excellent for reaching specific named people, such as customers, lapsed customers, supporters and members, and specific households or neighbourhoods.
On cost, social usually wins per impression. Mail often wins per result with warm audiences: JICMAIL's Response Rate Tracker puts warm direct mail at a 6.3% average response and £8.80 ROI per £1. Lower postage through Mailmark sortation and the right format narrows the gap further. See how much direct mail costs.
How to use direct mail and social together
- 1
Mail your priority audience

- 3
Extend reach
Use social look-alike audiences, or partially addressed mail and door drops, to reach similar people you don't yet know.
